HYMN LXXXV. Maruts.

Those who gaze ahead, like women, on their way, doers of great deeds, swift runners, Rudra’s sons, The Maruts have made the sky and earth expand and grow; in sacrifices they take delight, the strong and fierce.

They have reached their full potential, attaining greatness; Rudra has settled in heaven. Singing their praises, they generate power, making glory for the sons born by Prśni.

When, children of the cow, they shine in fine attire, and lay their golden ornaments on their fair limbs, They drive away all adversaries from their path, and, following their tracks, abundance flows down.

When, mighty warriors, you wield your spears, overthrowing even what cannot be overthrown, When, O Maruts, you harness the fleet spotted deer, to your chariots, the rain-bearing host.

When you harness the spotted deer to your chariots, driving the thunderbolt, O Maruts, into battle, Torrents of dark storm clouds rush forth, moistening the earth like a skin with water.

Let your swift-moving horses carry you hitherward with their fleet wings. Come forward with your weapons. Sit on the grass; a wide seat has been made for you. Delight yourselves, O Maruts, in the pleasant food.

Strong in their native strength, they have grown to greatness, stepping into the firmament and making their home vast. When Viṣṇu saved the Soma, bringing wild delight, the Maruts sat like birds on their dear holy grass.

Like heroes, they rush about in quest of battle, like combatants seeking fame in war. Every creature is afraid before the Maruts; men look like kings, terrible to behold.

When Tvaṣṭar, skillful of hand, turned the golden thunderbolt, with a thousand edges, crafted more skilfully, Indra received it to perform heroic deeds. He slew Vṛtra and forced the flood of water forth.

They push the well up high with their vigorous strength, cleaving the cloud, even if it is very strong. The Maruts, generous Givers, sending forth their voice, in the wild joy of Soma, wrought their glorious deeds.

They drive the cloud transversely, directing it hitherward, and pour the fountain forth for thirsty Gotama. Shining with varied light, they come to him with help; they
