HYMN LXXII. Agni.

Though he holds many gifts for men, he humbles the higher powers of each wise ordainer. Agni is now the treasure-lord of treasures, always granting all immortal bounties.

The gods could not find him, the dear infant who still surrounds us. We followed his path, worn weary, devoted, reaching the lovely highest home of Agni.

With holy oil, the pure ones served you for three autumn seasons, Agni. Therefore, they won holy names for worship, and nobly born they dignified their bodies.

Revealing the powers of Rudra to the spacious earth and heaven, the holy ones made them known. The mortal band, discerning in the distance, found Agni standing in the loftiest station.

Nigh they approached, one-minded, with their spouses, kneeling to him adorable paid worship. Finding protection in his own friend’s eye, they made their own the bodies they chastened.

As the holy beings discovered the thrice-seven mystic things within you, With these, one-minded, they preserve the Amṛta: guard the life of all their plants and cattle.

You, Agni, knowers of men’s works, have sent us good food in constant course for our sustenance. You, deeply skilled in the paths of gods, became an envoy never weary, offering-bearer.

Knowing the Law, the seven strong floods from heaven, full of good thought, discerned the doors of riches. Saramā found the cattle’s firm-built prison, by which the race of man is still supported.

Those who approached all noble operations, making a path that leads to life immortal, To be the Bird’s support, the spacious mother, Aditi, and her great Sons stood in power.

When the gods immortal made both eyes of heaven, they gave him the gift of beauteous glory. Now they flow forth like rivers set in motion; they knew the Red Steeds coming down, O Agni.
