HYMN XXIII. Agni.

Worship the Jātavedas, sing to him who gladly accepts,

Whose smoke wanders freely, and no hand can grasp his flame.

You, dear to all men, Visvamanas, raise Agni with your song, The Giver, and his flames that none can match.

His determined attack, to gain vigor and sustenance, Through his revealing power, the priest gains wealth.

4

The unending flame rises, the Radiant One’s flame, Most radiant, with glowing jaws and glory in its train.

Skilled in fair sacrifice, praised, rise in divine beauty, Shining with lofty splendor, with effulgent light.

Come, O Agni, called straight to our offerings, As you were sent before, bearing gifts to us.

7

I invoke you, Agni, the ancient Invoking Priest of living men, Laud and magnify you for me, with this song.

8

Whom, wondrous wise, they animate with solemn rites and fair form, Kind to men who follow the holy Law.

9

True to Law, who perfects the sacrifice, Law-loving ones! You with your song have pleased in the place of prayer.

10

May all our sacrifices reach the truest Aṅgirasa, Who among men is the most illustrious Priest.

Unending Agni, yours are all these high flames, Like horses and stallions, showing their strength.

12

So give us, Lord of Power and Might, riches combined with hero strength, And guard us with our sons and grandsons in our battles.

13

When the eager Lord of men is friendly to Mantri’s race, Agni wards off demons, enchanters, with your flame.

14

O Hero Agni, Lord of men, hear this new praise of mine, Burn down the Rakṣasas, charmers, with your flame.

15

No mortal foe can ever prevail by magic over him Who serves Agni well with sacrificial gifts.

16

Vyaśva the sage, who sought the Bull, has won you, As such may we enkindle you for ample wealth.

17

Uśanā Kāvya established you, Agni, as Invoking Priest, The Jātavedas, Sacrificing Priest for man.

18

All Deities of one accord appointed you their messenger, You, God, through hearing, had first claim to sacrifice.

May the mortal hero make you his
