HYMN XLVI. Indra.

That we may gain wealth and power, we poets invoke you, Indra, the hero’s lord: In battles, men call on you, Indra, in chariot races, call on you.

As such, O Wonderful One, whose hand holds thunder, praised as mighty, Caster of the Stone! Pour on us boldly, Indra, cattle and chariots, ever to be the conqueror’s strength.

We call upon that Indra, who, most active, ever slays the foe: Lord of the brave, Most Manly, with a thousand powers, help us and prosper us in battle.

Rsisama, you drive men like a bull with anger, in the fierce fray. Be our helper in the great battle for light, water, and life.

O Indra, bring us fame and glory, enriching, mightiest, excellent, With which, O Wondrous God, fair-faced, thunder-armed, you have filled this earth and sky.

We call on you, O King, Mighty among the gods, Ruler of men, to assist us. Make our weak parts strong, Excellent God, make our foes easy to subdue.

All strength and valor that is found in the tribes of Nahusas, and all the splendid fame that the Five Tribes enjoy, Bring it all, Indra, at once.

Or, Maghavan, what vigorous strength lies in Trkshi, in Druhyus or Paru’s folk, Fully bestow on us, that in the victorious battle we may subdue our foes.

O Indra, grant a happy home, a triple refuge, triple strong. Bestow a dwelling place on the rich lords and me, and keep your dart far from these.

10

Those who, with minds intent on plunder, subdue the foe, Boldly attack and strike him down— From these, O Indra, who loves song, be closest guardian of our lives.

11

And now, O Indra, strengthen us: come near and aid us in the fight, When the feathered arrows fly in the air, the sharp-pointed arrows.

12

Give us, where heroes strain their bodies in the fight, the shelter that our fathers loved. To us and to our sons give refuge: keep all unobserved hostility far away.
