1

WITH these my hymns I praise that Indra who is alone to be invoked by mortals, The Lord, the Mighty One, of manly vigor, victorious, True, and wise.

2

Our ancestors, the Seven Sages, urged him to show his might, On high, swift, striking down foes, guileless in speech, and mighty in thought.

3

We seek that Indra to gain his wealth, bringing much food, men, and heroes. Bring us, Lord of Bay Steeds, joyous wealth, abundant, unending.

4

Tell us, if earlier singers at thy hand have found good fortune, What is thy share and portion, Strong Subduer, Asura-slayer, rich, invoked by many?

5

He who for car-borne Indra, armed with thunder, has a hymn, deep and piercing, Who sends a song effective, firmly grasping, and strength-bestowing, comes near the mighty.

6

Strong of thyself, thou by this art shattered, with thought-swift Parvata, Ripping apart what was firmly fixed and never shaken.

7

Him will we fit for you with new devotion, the strongest Ancient One, So may that Indra, boundless, faithful Leader, lead us over all hard places.

8

You for the people who oppress have kindled the earthly and heavenly firmaments. With heat, O Bull, consume them: heat earth and flood for him who hates devotion.

9

Of all the Heavenly Folk, of earthly creatures, thou art the King, O Indra, In thy right hand, O Indra, grasp the thunder, Eternal! Destroying all enchantments.

10

Give us confirmed prosperity, O Indra, vast and inexhaustible for the foe's subduing. Strengthen therewith the Arya's hate and Dasa's, and make Nahusas' arms mighty.

11

Come with thy team bringing all blessings, Disposer, much-invoked, exceedingly holy. Thou whom no fiend, no God can stay or hinder, come swiftly with these Steeds in my direction.
