HYMN XXX. Indra.

Where is that Hero? Who has seen Indra driving the swift chariot pulled by tawny horses, Thunderspeaker, seeking wealth at the Soma press, and going to his house, much invoked, to help him?

I have seen his strong and hidden abode, longingly seeking the Founder’s dwelling. I asked others, and they said, May we, awake men, reach Indra.

We will tell Indra, when we offer libation, what great deeds you have done to please us. Let him who does not know learn, and let those who know listen: Maghavan rides with his army here.

When born, you made your spirit firm; alone you seek war against many. With might you split even the rock and found the stable of the cows.

Since then, all gods have feared Indra; you conquered all the floods that served the Dāsa.

These blissful Maruts sing their psalm to praise you, pouring Soma libation to you. Indra with wondrous powers subdued the Dragon, the cunning lurker who surrounded the waters.

You, Maghavan, from the start scattered enemies, speeding while rejoicing in the milk, the Giver. Seeking man’s prosperity, you tore Namuci’s head, the Dāsa.

Pounding Namuci’s head, you also made me your associate, Indra! And the rolling stone in heaven, both worlds on a car, brought to the Maruts.

The Dāsa took women as weapons, what harm can their weak armies do to me? He distinguished his two voices well, and Indra then advanced to fight the Dasyu.

The cows, lowing around, went lowing everywhere, on every side. These Indra reunited with his helpers, as the well-pressed Soma made him joyful.

When the Somas mixed by Babhru cheered him, the Steer bellowed loudly in its habitations. So Indra drank it, the Fort-destroyer, and gave him guerdon, in return, of milk-cows.

These good deeds have the Rusamas done, Agni! They have granted me four thousand cattle. We have received Rnancaya’s wealth, the most heroic of heroes, freely offered.
