HYMN III. Agni.

At your birth you are Varuṇa, O Agni; when you are kindled, you become Mitra. In you, O Son of Strength, all gods are gathered. Indra you are to the man who makes an offering.

You are Aryaman as you concern yourself with maiden mysteries, your name, O Self-sustainer. As a kind friend with streams of milk, they blend you together, making wife and lord one-minded.

The Maruts adorn your beauty for your glory, yes, Rudra! For your birth, brightly colored. That which was fixed as Viṣṇu’s highest position—by that, you guard the secret of the cows.

Gods through your glory, God who is so lovely! Granting abundant gifts, they gain immortal life. Men have established Agni as their own priest and serve him gladly for praise from those who live.

There is no priest more skilled than you in worship; none Self-sustainer surpasses you in wisdom. The man whose house you dwell in, O God, by sacrifice shall conquer mortals.

With your aid, O Agni, may we conquer through our offerings, fain for wealth, awakened: May we in battle, in the days’ assemblies, O Son of Strength, by riches conquer mortals.

He shall bring evil on the evil-plotters whoever turns against us with sin and outrage. Destroy this slander of him, O Agni, whoever injures us with double-dealing.

At this dawn's flush, God! Our ancient fathers served you with offerings, making you their envoy, When, Agni, to the store of wealth you go, a God enkindled with good things by mortals.

Save, you who know, draw your father near, who counts as your own son, O Child of Power. O wise Agni, when will you regard us? When, skilled in holy law, will you direct us?

10

Adoring you, he gives you many titles, when you, Good Lord! accept this as Father. And does not Agni, strong in divine might, gain splendid bliss when he grows mighty?

Most youthful Agni, truly you bear your praiser safely over all his troubles. Thieves have been seen by us and open foes: unknown have been the plots of the wicked.
