Agni, who shines against the dawns, is awakened. The holy singer who precedes the sages. With widespread radiance, kindled by the devout, the priest has opened both doors of darkness.
Agni has grown mighty through praise, to be adored with hymns of those who sing its praises. Loving the varied aspects of holy order at the dawn’s first glow, it shines as an envoy.
Agni has been established among men’s homes, fulfilling the law, friend, the root of waters. Loved and adored, it has ascended high, the singer, the object of our invocations.
Agni is Mitra when properly kindled, Mitra as priest, Varuṇa, Jātavedas; Mitra as active minister, and house-friend, Mitra of flowing rivers and mountains.
The Earth guards his dear lofty place, guarding the course of Sūrya with might. Guarding the Seven-headed in the center, guarding the sublime enjoyment of the gods.
The skilled God who knows all forms of knowledge created for himself a fair form, fit for worship. This Agni protects the Soma’s skin, the Bird’s place rich in fatness, with care that never stops.
Agni eagerly enters the fat shrine, giving easy access. Radiant, pure, sublime, and purifying, It again and again renovates its mothers.
Born suddenly, by plants it grows to greatness, when tender shoots increase it with holy oil. Like waters lovely when they rush downward, may Agni protect us in its parents’ lap.
Praised, the strong one shines forth with kindling fuel to the earth’s center, to the height of heaven. May Agni, friend, adorable Mātariśvan, as envoy bring the gods to our worship.
Best of all luminaries, lofty Agni supports the height of heaven, When, far from Bhṛgus, Mātariśvan kindles the oblation-bearer where he lies in secret.
As holy food, Agni gives wealth in cattle, lasting, rich in wonders to your invoker. May we be born a son and spreading offspring. Agni, may this be your gracious will to our words.
