1

From my heart flows the hymn to Indra, the Lord, recited, built with praises; The awakening song sung in holy assembly: what is born for you, O Indra, hear.

2

Born from heaven even in times past, the awakening song in holy assembly, Auspicious, clothed in white and shining robes, this is the ancient hymn of our ancestors.

3

The Mother of the Twins bore twin children; my tongue's tip rose and rested silent. Killing darkness at the base of light, the newly born couple attained their beauty.

4

No mortal is found to blame our forefathers who fought to win the cattle. Their strengthener was Indra, the majestic one; he spread their stalls of cows, the Wonder-worker.

5

As a friend with friendly men, Navgāvas, with heroes, on his knees he sought the cattle. There, truly, with ten Daśagāvas, Indra found the Sun hidden in darkness.

6

Indra found the milk collected in the milch-cow, by foot and hoof, in the cow's place of pasture. What lay hidden in the waters, he held in his right hand, the rich rewarder.

7

He took the light, distinguishing it from darkness: may we be far removed from all misfortune. These songs, O Soma-drinker, cheered by Soma, Indra, accept from my most zealous poet.

8

May light shine through both worlds for worship; may we be far from the most overwhelming evil. Great woe comes even from hostile mortals, piled up; but good at rescue are the Vasus.

9

Call upon Maghavan, auspicious Indra, the Best Hero in the fight where spoils are gathered, The Strong, who listens, who gives aid in battles, who slays the Vṛtras, wins, and gathers riches.
