HYMN XXVIII. Indra. Vasukra.

All my other friends are gathered here, but my Sire-in-law has not come hither. So may he eat the grain and drink the Soma, and, satisfied, return to his dwelling.

The Bull with sharpened horns roars loudly: standing high above earth's breadth. That man I protect and save in all his troubles, who fills my flanks when he sheds the Soma.

Stone workers press out for you, O Indra, strong, gladdening Soma, and you drink of it. Bulls are dressed for you, and you eat of them when, Maghavan, you are invited with food.

Solve this riddle for me, O singer: Rivers send their swollen water backward. The fox sneaks up to the approaching lion: the jackal drives the wild boar from the brushwood.

How shall I solve this riddle, I, the simple, declare the thought of you the Wise and Mighty? Tell us, well knowing, as befits the season: Whitherward is your prosperous chariot advancing?

They magnify me, me the mighty, higher than even high heaven is my charpole. I demolish many thousands at once: my Sire begot me without a foe to match me.

And the Gods know me also, Indra, as mighty, fierce, and strong in every exploit. Exulting with the bolt, I slew Vṛtra, and for the offerer opened the cow-stall with might.

The Deities approached, carrying axes; splitting the wood, they came with their attendants. They laid good timber in the fire-receivers, and burnt the grass where it grew.

The hare has swallowed up the opposing razor: I sundered the distant mountain with a clod. The great will I make subject to the little: the calf shall grow in strength and cat the bull.

The strong-winged eagle left his talon, as a snared lion left the trap that caught him. Even the wild steer in his thirst is captured: the leather strap still holds his foot entangled.

May the leather strap entangle their foot who fatten on the viands of the Brahman. They all devour the bulls set free to wander, while they themselves destroy their body's vigor.

Those who performed holy duties sped in person with their offerings to Soma. Speaking like man, they gave us
