1

Don’t burn him up completely, Agni; keep his body and skin intact. O Jātavedas, when you have prepared him, send him to the Fathers.

2

When you have made him ready, Jātavedas, give him to the Fathers. When he reaches the life awaiting him, he will be the controller of the Deities.

3

Receive your eye in the Sun, your spirit in the Wind; go where your merit leads, to earth or heaven. Go, if it’s your fate, to the waters; settle among plants with all your parts.

4

His portion is the goat; with heat consume him; let your fierce flame, your bright glow, burn him. With your auspicious forms, oh Jātavedas, take this man to the region of the pious.

5

Again, O Agni, send the one offered in you to the Fathers, who join our offerings. May he increase his offspring with new life; let him rejoin a body, Jātavedas.

6

May Agni heal any wound the dark bird has inflicted—be it on the emmet, serpent, or jackal. May Agni, who consumes all things, and Soma, who has passed into the Brahmans, heal it.

7

Shield yourself with flesh against Agni’s flames, surround yourself with fat and marrow. So will the Bold One, eager to attack with fierce glow, fail to encircle and consume you.

8

Be patient, O Agni, don’t upset this ladle; the Gods and those who merit Soma love it. This ladle, which the Immortals rejoice at, serve the Gods from.

9

I send off flesh-eating Agni, bearing off stains, may he depart to Yama’s subjects. But let this other Jātavedas carry oblation to the Gods, for he is skilled.

10

I choose Agni, flesh-eater, who has passed within your dwelling, to be Father-worship’s God. While looking on this other Jātavedas. Let him light flames in the supreme assembly.

11

With offerings meet, Agni, bring the Fathers who support the Law. Announce oblations paid to Fathers and Deities.

12

We gladly set you down, gladly make you burn and glow. Bring the yearning Fathers near to eat the sacrifice’s food.

13

Make the spot cool again
