1

At the beginning, Hiranyagarbha arose, the sole lord of all creatures. He supports and holds up this earth and sky. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

2

Giver of breath, strength, and vigor, he whose commands all the gods acknowledge— The lord of death, whose shadow is eternal life. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

3

He, by his greatness, became the sole ruler of all living beings that breathe and sleep; He who is lord of men and lord of cattle. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

4

Through his might, he has these snowy mountains, and men call the sea and Rasa his possession: His arms are these, his are these celestial regions. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

5

By him, the heavens are strong and the earth steadfast, by him, light’s realm and sky-vault are upheld: By him, the regions in mid-air were measured. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

6

To him, supported by his aid, two opposing armies confront, trembling in their spirit, As the rising sun shines upon them. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

7

From him, the mighty waters came, containing the universal seed, producing Agni, There sprang the gods’ one spirit into being. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

8

He, in his might, surveyed the floods containing productive force and generating worship. He is the god of gods, and none beside him. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

9

May he not harm us, who is the father of the earth, nor he whose laws are sure, the heavens’ creator, He who brought forth the great and luminous waters. Which deity should we honor with our sacrifice?

10

Prajāpati! You alone understand all these created things, and none beside you. Grant us our heart’s desire when we invoke you: may we have wealth in abundance.
