1

The heavens and Earth, in harmony with all Devas, welcomed his might with favor. When he appeared, displaying his majesty and power, he drank Soma and grew exceedingly strong.

2

Viṣṇu praises and extols his majesty, granting the meath its flow with light. When Indra, the Powerful, struck down Vṛtra with those who followed him, he earned the choice of the Devas.

3

When, armed with warlike weapons, eager to win your praise, you met Vṛtra, the Dragon, for battle, Then all the Maruts, gathered with dice, extolled you, Mighty One, your powerful majesty.

4

As soon as he sprang to life, he drove back the opposing forces; the Hero looked forward to manly deeds and war. He split the rock, allowed concurrent streams to flow, and with his skill established the heavens' wide vault.

5

Indra always possesses supreme power; he forced heaven and earth apart, far from each other. He hurled his iron thunderbolt, a joy to Varuṇa and Mitra’s worshipper, hurling it with immense force.

6

Then, to the mighty powers of Indra, the fierce Stormer, with a loud voice, they came swiftly; When the Potent One tore Vṛtra apart with his strength, who held the waters back, surrounded by darkness.

7

Even in the first of those heroic acts they executed together, deep darkness fell upon the slain, and Indra won the right to be first invoked.

8

Then all the Devas praised your deeds of manly might, inspired by draughts of Soma. As Agni eats dry food, he devoured Vṛtra, the Dragon, mortally wounded by Indra’s deadly dart.

9

Proclaim his many friendships, met with friendship, made with singers, with the skilled and eloquent. Indra, when he subdues Dhuni and Cumuri, lists to Dabhīti for his faithful spirit’s sake.

10

Grant me manifold riches with noble horses, to be remembered while my songs address you. May we pass all our troubles easily; find us today a wide and extensive ford.
