Agni, I invoke for our prosperity; I call on Mitra and Varuṇa to aid us here. I call on Night that gives rest to all living things; I call on Savitar, the God, to lend us help. Throughout the dusky sky advancing, laying to rest the immortal and the mortal, Borne in his golden chariot he comes, Savitar, the God who looks on every creature. The God moves by the upward path, the downward; with two bright Bays, adorable, he journeys. Savitar comes, the God from afar, chasing from us all distress and sorrow. His chariot adorned with pearls, of various colors, lofty, with golden pole, the God mounts, The many-rayed One, Savitar the holy, bound, bearing power and might, for darksome regions. With white hooves, the God manifests light to all the peoples; held in Savitar’s lap, divine One, all men, all beings have their place forever. There are three heavens; two Savitar’s, adjacent: in Yama’s world is one, the home of heroes. As on a linch-pin, firm, things immortal rest; he who knows it, let him declare it. Strong-winged, he has lightened up the regions, deep-quivering Asura, the gentle Leader. Now where is Sūrya? Where is one to tell us which celestial sphere his ray has wandered? The earth’s eight points his brightness illuminates, three desert regions, and the Seven Rivers. God Savitar, the gold-eyed, has come here, bestowing choice treasures on him who worships. Golden-handed Savitar, far-seeing, travels between the earth and heaven, Driving away sickness, bidding the Sun approach us, spreading the bright sky through the darksome region. May he, gold-handed Asura, kind Leader, come to us with his help and favor. Driving off Rākṣasas and Yātudhānas, the God is present, praised in hymns at evening. O Savitar, your ancient dustless pathways are well established in the air’s mid-region: O God, come by those fair paths to travel, preserve us from harm today, and bless us.
