HYMN XXII. Aśvins and Others

Awaken the Aśvins, who harness their chariot at dawn: may they Approach to sip this Soma juice.

We invoke the Aśvins Two, the noble-borne gods in a fine chariot, the best Charioteers who reach the heavens.

With honey-dipped reins you drive, Aśvins, and sprinkle the sacrifice With your pleasant whips.

4

As you journey in your chariot, not far, O Aśvins, is the home Of him who offers Soma juice.

5

For my protection, I invoke the golden-armed Savitar. He knows, as a god, the place.

6

That he may send us aid, praise the Waters’ Offspring Savitar: We seek his holy ways.

7

We call upon him, distributor of wondrous bounty and wealth, On Savitar who sees men.

8

Come here, friends, and sit down, Savitar, to be praised by us, Giving good gifts, it’s beautiful.

9

May Agni bring to us the willing spouses of the gods, And Tvaṣṭar, to the Soma draught.

10

Most youthful Agni, bring their spouses, Hotrā, Bhāratī, Varūtrī, Dhiṣaṇā, for aid.

11

Spouses of heroes, goddesses, with full wings may they come to us With great protection and aid.

12

Indrāṇī, Varuṇānī, and Agnāyī, I invite you here, For our well-being, to drink the Soma juice.

13

May Heaven and Earth, the mighty pair, drench our sacrifice And feed us full with nourishment.

14

Their waters rich with fat, there in the Gandharva’s steadfast place, The singers taste through sacred songs.

15

Thornless be thou, O Earth, spread wide before us for a dwelling-place: Vouchsafe us shelter broad and sure.

16

The gods be gracious to us from the place where Vishnu strides Through the seven earth regions!

17

Through all this world, Vishnu strides; thrice his foot he plants, and all Is gathered in his step’s dust.

18

Vishnu, the guardian, whom none deceives, made three steps; henceforth Establishing his high decrees.

19

Look on Vishnu’s works, by which the friend of Indra, closely
