1

To Indra, the Asura, has bowed down the sky; to Indra, the mighty Earth with its vast lands, to gain the light, with vast lands. All gods together have placed Indra in the forefront. For Indra, all libations must be set apart, all man’s libations set apart.

2

In all libations, men with heroic spirit urge the Universal One, each seeking separate light, each wishing to win the light apart. Like a ship, we will set you to the pole of strength, men who win with sacrifices, Indra, men who win Indra with their praises.

3

Couples desiring your aid storm you, pouring their gifts to win a stall of cattle, pouring gifts, Indra, seeking you. When two men seeking spoils or heaven bring you face to face in war, You show, Indra, then the bolt, your constant friend, the Bull that ever waits on you.

4

Men of old knew your heroic power, with which you break down autumnal forts, breaking them down with conquering might. You have chastised, O Indra, Lord of Strength, the man who worships not, And made this great earth and these water-floods yours; with joyous heart, these water-floods.

5

They have proclaimed far this hero-might when you, O Strong One, in your joy help your suppliants, who sought to win you as their friend. Their battle-cry made sound victorious in the shocks of war. One stream after another they gained from you, eager for glory, they gained.

6

Also may this morning be well inclined to us, mark at our call our offerings and our song of praise, our call that we may win the light. As you, O Indra Thunder-armed, will, as the Strong One, slay the foe, Listen to the prayer of me a later sage, hear the prayer of a later sage.

7

O Indra, grow strong and well inclined to us, you very mighty, slay the man who is our foe, slay the man, Hero! with your bolt. Slay the man who injures us: hear, as ready, to hear. Far be malignity, like mischief on the march, far be all malignity.
